Betrayal Turned to Love

It started with the Holy Feast,
With your brothers, those you trusted most.
The bread your body, the wine your blood,
"We're here for you...We'll die for you", were the oaths they did boast.

In the Garden of Gethsemane, they were by your side,
The night was dark and lonely, "Father in Heaven", was your cry.
"May this cup pass from me, but above all else Your will be done",
Did they pray with you, did they stay with you...or was it all a lie?

Where were your brothers, where were your friends,
Through accusations, tortures, and cries of "Crucify Him!"
Down the Via Del a Rosa, the cross upon torn flesh,
You sought out your brothers, but found none to give you rest.

Did the nails through your hands pierce as deeply,
As the insults from those whom you gave your love completely?
Could the pain in your flesh, compare to the pain in your heart,
As you suffered and hung, your soul soon to depart?

All alone in a world that mocked, scoffed, and betrayed,
Our God up in Heaven, you touched as you prayed.
His arms they upheld you, His heart your voice reached,
His love He poured out, as you sought and beseeched.

The onlookers laughed as you forgave them,
Some scoffed, as others mourned.
They felt no need of forgiveness,
In turn they gave you scorn.

And yet kindness shown upon your face,
As you demonstrated forgiveness, mercy and grace.
From your wounds, your love freely poured,
To God, His people, to Him you restored.

Lord, please show us the way to show others this love,
To those who have betrayed us and caused us to pain.
When resentment and bitterness seek to poison our souls
For when we forgive as you, our soul's rest we will gain.
